Early comments I see on Bing maps beta are complaints about difficulties running it on Linux machines, or more specifically, running Silverlight on their machine. I have seen a fair few comments on poor performance, in terms of speed, but I'd like to excuse Microsoft on that one because I imagine right now they are getting an unusual number of hits!

I notice when I use Bing maps it says it's a beta, do you know if they going for a Google style continuous beta of this, or is there a 'go live' date when it will be released? I noticed the satellite photos for my area are at least two years old.

How they prep the collection XMLs is another thing - for their Dynamic Collection preparation for the wikipedia collection they are using a lot of CDN distribution and SQL Server querying to serve up a Pivot optimised feed (www.getpivot.com/.../hosting.aspx), generating the SeaDragon image tiles on the fly as well.

Behold the Schema for the collections, so Data Source is all XML and would be some variety of in memory model, but doubt they've gone to the extent of implementing VertiPaq for this. No idea how far it scales, but there's going to be some limitations purely based on their choice of visualisation as to how many individual elements they can render to the screen.

Note that the UI is heavily influenced by the presence of the filters on that left hand side - they want some intelligent cutting down of the volume to aid in getting to the relevant data first before doing the more visual slicing and dicing.

The World Tour is currently assuming that your bandwidth is up to the task of getting those tiles pretty fast as it zooms between locations on the SlideShow.

Whilst you can't adjust the time between locations, you can at least use the Slideshow Controls to pause and move between locations at your own (and your bandwidths!) pace.

Thanks for the fuller overview Matt - feature parity with Google Maps and then some it would seem ...
